How to choose a Christian School in Houston

As parents, we are constantly searching for the very best education we can provide for our children. Whether you have young children starting out in school, your family has to move cities, or you realize that your child isn’t thriving in their current school environment, choosing the right school can feel overwhelming. We believe it’s very important for families to find the school that is the right fit for their unique needs.

A Christian school should focus on the Gospel of Jesus, have regular conversation about God’s grace and forgiveness, provide a moral education as presented in the Bible, offer competitive academic programs, and give your family a sense of community. Here are a few tips and questions we recommend when you are looking for a Christian school:

  1. Go see the school during the school day
With work schedules, young children, and other daily tasks it may feel like going to see a school after hours or over the summer is easier. But we really recommend visiting the school you are considering during a school day whenever possible. This will allow you to get a feel for the student/teacher interactions. Observing classes in action and students at lunch and recess will give you great insight into the culture of the school. Another benefit is that you can see how the students learn about Jesus daily.
  2. Talk to parents who have their children at the school
Beyond reading online reviews about a school, ask for the contact information of some of the parents at the school. These parents can tell you about what their children are learning, how the teachers form partnerships with the parents, and how the teachers approach their lessons. You can also look on Facebook and Next Door for parents who have left reviews. We encourage you to reach out to them with questions. Ask questions about what Christian teachings their child is bringing home in order to learn about the school’s community.
  3. Go to a church service at the associated church
This will help you see how the congregation supports the school. Congregation support can really help a school succeed. Attending a service will help you learn more about the church’s teachings and see how they align with your family’s beliefs. While you don’t need to have the same beliefs as the church, you can see the teachings in action and get a sense for how the church/school environment will impact your child.

I loved ho you talked about visiting the Christian school you are considering during school hours. It makes sense that doing this can help you know the type of programs they have to help your kids learn about God and the thing they need to succeed. My wife wants to send out girls to a school that will help us teach them good values and ethics so I’m glad I found your post.

  2. Jay says:

I love that tip of checking it out in person. Having that feeling of what a place is like in person can be a big decision factor. I like to ask how my child feels whenever we go to a new place. That way, I can know how they feel too!

  3. Thanks for the advice about reading online reviews when choosing a Christian school. It would be good to consider their reviews to get a feeling for their qualifications. My sister is looking for a school for her daughter, so she’ll have to consider checking online for reviews first.
